Settling In

Yesterday we settled into Sreenidhi International School. Every meal was fabulous, and everyone is so kind. It is interesting to see that certain people types that fit into positions at this school are similar to the personality types that fit those positions at home. It is an intriguing universal. It is as though I can think of a corresponding American to each teacher here.

The kids are doing well, but they are still getting a bit whiny when we all get tired. I can't blame them too much for that since I feel equally whiny on the inside due to travel exhaustion.

We met all of the administrators yesterday and many of the teachers. We went shopping last night at a mall in the city, and I can safely say that the driving was scarier than any European or Latin American road I have ever traveled. In addition to mopeds and pedestrians inches from being hit by vehicles at all times, there are also donkeys, water buffalo, and you-name-it all over the street. Lanes are nonexistent. The courtesy that exists one-on-one with precious Indian individuals disappears when they get behind any wheel. I needed a serious break after the first trip.

I purchased a new salwar kameez on our trip because my luggage has not yet arrived. I was so tired at the end of the day that I nearly passed out when I got back to my room. Dawn, my roommate, and I slept soundly until 5:30 or so when Chanticleer began his morning chants.

  1. what's a "salwar kameez" ?
thank you for your blog, and i will anxiously await every single entry!!! you being there is the most exciting thing that's ever (not) happened to me! i'm TOTALLY serious!

i think its kind of funny in a way
that the universe chose YOUR luggage to lose-- i know you well enough to know that 'meticulous packing' is probably the understatement of the year, and that it probably took at least a week of your life off in stress-- you poor thing~! but you appear to be having a fantastic perspective. i hope you see your froggie luggage tag soon, but i'm glad that you know that nothing but your beautiful spirit defines you. I'm also glad the food is fabulous. I was a bit worried about what you might be getting over there!

I am with you in spirit. What a dream to get to do what you're doing.

    love you.

  3. I'm with Tiff...what's a "salwar kameez"? It sure sounds like a wonderful trip, lost luggage and all! I too am living vicariously through you! :-) I love you with all my heart and miss you terribly! I know we don't see each other often, but there is something about knowing the physical distance between us that makes me miss you even more!

  4. Hi, ladies! Thanks for your comments. Fortunately, my luggage arrived within 48 hours of its loss. Some Lufthansa men delivered it personally. The airline handled it as well as could be expected.

I still haven't been able to upload my pictures, but I promise I am trying. Here is what a salwar kameez looks like: http://www.designersalwarkameez.com/cotton-fc-winter-2007/indian-clothing/salwar-kameez-fc201.jpg It is "daily wear" for most Indian women. It is basically the other design here besides the sari. The pic in the link looks a lot like the one I am wearing today.
